Peperino tuff from the Alban Hills near Rome, historically used as building stone. Source
Description
Tuff is consolidated volcanic ash and fragments. Some deposits are welded by heat; others retain a more porous, fragmental texture. Grey, cream, pink and brown varieties occur. Colour, pore structure and working characteristics vary substantially between deposits.
History
Tuff records explosive volcanic activity, in contrast to rock formed as a solidified lava flow. The composition of the eruption and the way its deposits consolidated account for much of the variation encountered in quarried tuffs.
Commissioning
The named source, level of carving detail and final exposure should be discussed with the practitioner. A sample can establish the proposed finish. Architectural or water-holding work requires assessment of the actual stone and installation.
