A soapstone hand specimen from the GeoDIL rock collection. Source
Description
Soapstone is a talc-rich rock with a smooth, soapy feel. Other minerals affect its hardness and appearance; carving and architectural grades can differ. Colours commonly include grey and greenish tones. Soft varieties are responsive to carving but can also show scratches and wear.
History
Talc-rich stone develops through geological alteration and metamorphism. Its characteristic feel and working qualities have given soapstone a place among carving materials. Surface treatments can darken the stone and change the appearance of newly worked areas.
Commissioning
The intended handling and surface treatment should be agreed with the maker. Food, water or heat exposure needs to be stated explicitly. The selected stone and finished object should be assessed for that use, with appropriate advice on maintenance.
