Description

Natural stone includes rocks and mineral materials formed in nature and used for carving, building or other work. It covers igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, as well as materials such as quartz and calcite. Quarry names, mineral names and commercial families identify different aspects of a material.

History

Stoneworking traditions developed around available deposits and the means of extracting, transporting and shaping them. Local materials influenced regional architecture, while trade allowed selected carving and ornamental stones to travel much further.

Commissioning

The intended form, scale, setting and finish provide a starting point for material selection. A practitioner can then recommend particular stones and supplies. Thickness, joints, installation and care should be considered alongside the appearance of a sample.
