Description

Marble is a crystalline carbonate stone, usually composed of calcite or dolomite. The trade also uses the name for some other polishable stones. Colour, grain and veins contribute to carved form and slab composition. Surfaces may retain tool marks or be honed or polished.

History

Marble forms when limestone or dolomitic rock undergoes metamorphism. Its use in sculpture extends through antiquity, the Renaissance and later European traditions. Workshops developed methods for both direct carving and reproducing designs from models.

Commissioning

The actual block or slabs and the orientation of prominent veins should be approved. Finish and edges belong in the early design discussion. Calcite-rich marble is susceptible to acid etching; the intended setting, contact with liquids and future care should inform the selection.
