Polished Blue Pearl larvikite from Norway’s Larvik Batholith. Source
Description
Larvikite is an igneous rock from the Larvik area of Norway. Classified as monzonite, it consists largely of feldspar crystals. Some reflect blue or silver light as the viewing angle changes. Commercial selections range from lighter grey to dark grey stones.
History
Larvikite formed within the ancient Oslo Rift geological setting. Its distinctive reflected light has made it an ornamental stone for building facades and funerary monuments, with different quarry areas supplying named commercial types.
Commissioning
A sample should be viewed under the lighting and from the angles expected in the finished setting. The commercial selection and finish should be approved together. The optical effect varies within the stone and should be judged from the actual supply.
