A two-tonne pounamu sculpture carved with stepped pools and running water, on a Greymouth street.

Greymouth pounamu sculpture by Ian Boustridge. 2010 · Two-tonne jade sculpture and public water feature · Greymouth Source

Description

Jade principally refers to nephrite and jadeite; gemmological usage can also include certain green omphacites. Colours include green, white, lavender, yellow and black. Jade is valued for its toughness, or resistance to breaking, as well as its appearance. Detailed carving commonly relies on specialist abrasive working.

History

Nephrite was shaped into tools, ornaments and ritual objects in prehistoric cultures. Jade has an especially long carving history in China and was also valued by Mesoamerican peoples.

Commissioning

The material identity, provenance information and any treatments should be established before work begins. The proposed rough or blank can then be considered for colour, translucency and scale. A photograph alone is insufficient to authenticate the material.
