Description

Andesite is a fine-grained volcanic rock, commonly grey or blue-grey. Larger crystals may be visible within the finer groundmass. Its colour and texture vary with the deposit. In carving, the grain, joints and condition of the selected block influence the detail that can be achieved.

History

Andesite forms when volcanic magma cools at or near the surface. Its use in sculpture includes surviving Mexica works from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.

Commissioning

A sculpture or architectural commission should identify the proposed stone and finish. A worked sample allows the carver and client to assess the surface before the final form is settled. Joints and other features in the actual block should be considered during selection.
