Description

Memorials commemorate people, groups, events or shared histories. They may take the form of headstones, inscribed panels, sculpture, seats or public places. Words, imagery, stone and setting can be developed together. Lettering, carving, masonry and landscape design may each contribute to the finished work.

History

Stone commemoration encompasses both personal grave markers and public monuments. Established forms continue alongside individually commissioned works in which an artist develops the design around the person or event remembered.

Commissioning

The wording, names, dates and design should be approved carefully. The proposed site, permissions, fixing and installation responsibilities belong in the brief. Future care and any later additions to the inscription are worth considering before the stone is cut.
