Description

Stone furniture includes functional objects for sitting, placing and furnishing. A piece may be carved from one block or assembled with other stones and materials. Shape, contact surfaces, weight, joints and stability contribute to both its use and appearance. Natural veins can guide the composition.

History

Stone furniture ranges from elaborate historic tables to contemporary sculptural designs. The Farnese Table, made in the sixteenth century, combines a fitted-stone top with carved marble supports.

Commissioning

A commission should establish use, dimensions and the indoor or outdoor setting. Edges, support and any detachable parts should be discussed with the maker. Delivery, assembly and access to the final position need to be included in the scope.
