Description

Conservation safeguards existing stonework and its significance. It includes preventive care, monitoring and direct treatment where required. Assessment considers the material, condition, causes of deterioration and earlier interventions. Restoration may form part of a conservation project when it helps recover the understanding or use of a damaged work.

History

Care and repair have accompanied the survival of stone buildings and objects. Modern professional terminology distinguishes preventive conservation, remedial conservation and restoration; ICOM-CC set out these related terms in 2008.

Commissioning

Available history, photographs and treatment records should accompany a request for assessment. The proposal should explain the work’s condition, the aims of treatment and the extent of intervention. A completed treatment record and plan for continuing care are useful parts of the commission.
