Description
Architecture is the design and coordination of buildings and spaces. Stone may form load-bearing walls, external facing, interior surfaces or carved details. Its use is considered in relation to structure, weather, landscape and occupation. Architects work with engineers, masons, fabricators and other specialists to develop the design and its construction.
History
Stone has served both construction and ornament in historic architecture. Medieval European buildings, for example, combined masonry structures with carved portals, capitals and cloisters. Such work brought the design of a building into close relationship with the crafts used to make it.
Commissioning
A project begins with its intended use, site, approximate scale and budget. The scope should identify who coordinates design, material sourcing, technical investigations and construction. Stone selection and finish are developed alongside the building details in which they will be used.
